Fantastical’s task integration and timed events didn’t grow on me. I forgot to forward new emails from Spark to GoodTask. My diligence grew tired in those last few weeks though. Once you start to understand those buttons though, GoodTask can kickstart your Reminders app to a whole new level. I downloaded GoodTask, moved all my tasks from Things into Reminders and worked with GoodTask for about six weeks. (I’m well aware of Mail to Things, but I really wanted a direct integration.)Īnd so, I did an exploratory experiment. The app is almost perfect (no, you still can’t check off a recurring task before it comes due) and it’s officially on the Sticky List for my devices.īut Things doesn’t play as nice with Siri as Reminders does it doesn’t sync with Reminders, ensuring I could check off tasks inside Fantastical and know they were also checked off in Things and (at the time), Things didn’t work directly with my email app of choice. Which is actually a long, long time ago already. I’ve used Things 3 since Things 3 debuted. Naturally, this sort of meant the demise of Things 3 in my workflow. I’m on a bit of a time-blocking kick still (though it has slowed a little recently) and work to ensure my calendar holds everything I need. ![]() What I wanted was pretty simple: I wanted to easily ask Siri to add a task to my list, have that task show up in my task app, and have those tasks show up in my calendar app as well. I promise, I didn’t change apps for the sake of changing apps. This was less “workflow” and more “How do I make sure I capture tasks when I’m thinking about them in the car?” and “How do I ensure I don’t miss that email?”. I went through an exploratory period regarding my “productivity workflow” (gah, I hate those words) not too long ago. When you combine the excellent keyboard shortcuts that GoodTasks provides with their Quick Actions, you have a truly powerful application for managing your tasks, backed on the excellent sync that Apple Reminders provides. There and Back Again: My Things 3 Story Friday, Oct 01, 2021 Yes, Apple has okay keyboard shortcut support directly in Reminders it’s just not quite comprehensive enough for those that have lots of tasks to deal with. Keyboard Commandsįinally, GoodTasks has good keyboard shortcut support on both macOS and iPadOS. In addition to allowing subtasks to be added directly, GoodTasks has support for URL Schemes which can help you create complex projects that are triggered by input from Shortcuts. GoodTasks also solves one of my biggest issues with Shortcuts and Reminders, you can add subtasks directly on a task. If you’re going to check out GoodTasks, make sure you dig into the power they make available. I could devote an entire lesson to how to work with GoodTask quick actions. I find this to be the fastest way to sort through a bunch of tasks in my Inbox and assign them to different lists so that my Inbox is cleared out. On macOS you can select a task and press ⌘ O then start typing to jump to different quick actions. When you open a task you’ll see them as grey boxes under the tags on a task. Quick Actions are an easy way to adjust your tasks. Out of the box GoodTask sets up tags in a fairly standard Kanban flow. You can use this along with tags to create a proper Kanban board. GoodTask also provides a Kanban style view for your tasks. GoodTask list view GoodTask list view with week calendar ![]() You can see your tasks in a standard list, or add various types of calendars across the top. The only thing you can’t set from the GoodTask entry window is the location of a Reminder Enhanced ViewsĪnother thing that GoodTasks does to enhance Reminders is the different views that are available. For dates, you can use natural language to set when a task is due. You can add tags by using # in the title of a task, just like you would with Reminders. ![]() From this window you can add almost every piece of task information you’d need. With your keyboard shortcut set, you can now use it anywhere on macOS to bring up the GoodTask quick entry window. Then under General click the button labelled Global Keyboard Shortcut. To set this command press ⌘, to open settings. One of the big benefits of GoodTasks is that it can provide you with a global keyboard shortcut to add tasks to Reminders. If you use SetApp then GoodTasks is available there with your subscription. GoodTask has used Reminders as it’s sync system for a number of years, and then layered a bunch of excellent features on top of Reminders to make it a very powerful task management system. Before Apple added Smart Lists, and many other features, to Reminders there was GoodTask.
